I've been doing his weekly meditations and have been part of his online courses since ~2020. I'm also his tech support person.
Personal Experience
•His content integrates awakening, neuroscience, metamodernism, and psychedelics.
•It's more analytical, exact, and precise compared to a lot of other spiritual podcasts or teachers. That concreteness felt really approachable for me.
•It's accessible. He's had free weekly meditations since ~2018, and has a podcast.
•There's a community around Michael Taft. He's part of the Alembic community, which has been a huge part of my journey.
What Resonated
•I started doing longer sits (40 mins) through Michael Taft's courses, which was nice. There was a lot of drowsiness and hindrances at first, but it was helpful.
•The open awareness spaciousness practice was a foundation for a lot of what I've done since.
Benefits Gained
•In his guided meditations, he talks a lot. Michael is more on the technical side than the usual spiritual, soothing sounding meditation teacher.
•He can be a bit direct, and has a bit of a punk vibe. He'll say 'fuck you' in a meditation, for example. If you're looking for the more sugar and saccharine vibe, maybe you want something different.
•It can be a bit much for people just getting started. The meditations go deep into Hindu mantra chanting and visualizations, and can point to quite technical concepts of awakeness or enlightenment.
